Oklahoma City Moving Checklist
Most of the stress in a move comes from doing things in the wrong order. Work through this checklist and moving day becomes the easy part.
4 weeks before your move
- Request moving quotes and book your crew — month-end dates fill first
- Confirm your move-out and move-in dates in writing
- Start decluttering room by room and set aside donations
- Order boxes, tape, and packing paper, or ask about packing help
- Reserve elevators or loading zones with your apartment office
- Make a list of items that need special handling
2 weeks before your move
- Begin packing rooms you use least — guest rooms, storage, decor
- Label every box by room and general contents
- Schedule utility transfers for both addresses
- Submit your USPS change of address
- Transfer or update renters or homeowners insurance
- Arrange care for pets and small children on move day
The week of your move
- Finish packing everything except daily essentials
- Pack a first-night box: chargers, medications, toiletries, bedding, tools
- Defrost and dry the refrigerator if it is moving with you
- Disconnect appliances and secure loose hardware in labeled bags
- Confirm arrival window, address details, and parking with your movers
- Clear pathways, hallways, and driveways
Moving day
- Be available at both addresses or assign a trusted contact
- Walk the crew through the home and point out fragile or high-priority items
- Keep valuables, documents, and keys with you personally
- Protect floors at entry points if the weather is bad
- Do a final sweep of closets, cabinets, the attic, and the garage
- Confirm placement of large furniture before the crew leaves
After the move
- Unpack the first-night box and set up beds first
- Check large furniture and boxes for damage while the crew is still on site
- Test smoke detectors and change the locks if needed
- Update your address with banks, employers, and subscriptions
- Break down boxes and schedule recycling or pickup
- Leave a review to help the next person choosing movers
